From Shame to Strength: It’s time to turn the tide against body shaming

The recent controversy surrounding Mohiniyattam dancer Kalamandalam Sathyabhama’s body-shaming remarks has sparked widespread debate and introspection within the dance community and beyond.
In a recent interview on a YouTube channel, Sathyabhama made racist and casteist remarks, expressing her disdain towards seeing ‘dark’ men performing Mohiniyattam, referring to them as ‘black as a crow’. Her comments not only reflect a deep-rooted prejudice but also highlight the pervasive issue of body shaming, for men and women, within the arts.
Body shaming is a reality that many individuals face, and sadly, it starts at home. It is a serious form of bullying, harassment and humiliation. From the colour of the child’s skin to the baby’s weight, height, and even bodily hair, insensitive comments like these are enough to affect the confidence of any individual, let alone a child.
Instances from childhood where family members, including parents and relatives, casually pass comments about one’s appearance or that of others, leave a lasting impact. These remarks shape perceptions, create a shroud of insecurity, and contribute to a culture of judgment based on physical attributes. Sadly, body shaming no longer discriminates based on gender or age.
The dance community is not immune to the detrimental effects of body shaming. Men, in particular, have been trying to break the glass ceiling for years, and now with a new generation of audiences are finally getting more space on the stage. So, when renowned artists like Sathyabhama make way for such thoughtless comments, it not only breaks the effort but further exacerbates this issue, reinforcing harmful stereotypes and creating barriers for male dancers in the performing arts.
We all deal with our own “Sathyabhamas” at home – individuals who feel entitled to judge others based on their appearance. They adhere to society’s standards of beauty, often disregarding the diversity and uniqueness that make each individual beautiful in their way.
What is saddening and equally concerning is the normalization and silent acceptance of such behavior within society. Society’s obsession with beauty standards only exacerbates this issue, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem among those who don’t fit into the mold.
But amidst the negativity, there is hope. According to various news channels, the apparent reference made to Mohiniyattam dancer R L V Ramakrishnan has evoked much outrage and condemnation both from within and outside the dancing community.
The Kerala State Human Rights Commission’s decision to take suo motu cognizance of Sathyabhama’s remarks is a step in the right direction. It sends a clear message that such discriminatory behaviour will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will be held accountable for their actions.
Body positivity is the only cure for trauma related to body shaming. This trauma can lead to various issues like eating and image disorders, social withdrawal, deliberate self-harm and other long-term diseases. As individuals living in a society, we must foster a culture of acceptance and inclusivity, where everyone is celebrated for who they are, regardless of their appearance, and this effort must begin in our homes.
It’s a long journey, but one we must begin. Only then can we create a world where everyone feels comfortable and confident in their own skin.

Do not break our brotherhood: KPA opposes the Citizenship Amendment Bill

The Kerala Pravasi Association takes a stand against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, denouncing citizenship based on caste and religion.

KPA’s Chairman, Mr. Rajendran Vellapalath, and President, Mrs. Aswani Nambarambath, have petitioned the Supreme Court, challenging the discriminatory central policy.
In 1947, India was once divided in the name of religion. While Pakistan went on to become a religious state, India founded its secular policies that protected the beliefs of all religions and rejected religious divides.

Our constitution, post-independence, embraced secularism, and it is an important journey we must continue as real citizens. We reject the notion of an official religion or religious state.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill threatens this very ethos as discriminating against refugees defies humanity.

KPA stands firm, seeking judicial redressal to rectify such actions. Hence, we have filed a petition before the Supreme Court of India. We anticipate the court’s hearing of KPA’s Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and issuance of an interim order.

The Kerala Pravasi Association (KPA) has taken a significant step by filing a petition in the Supreme Court, to address the exorbitant air travel fares to and from the Gulf, a pressing concern for NRIs.

The petition was filed challenging Rule-135 of the Indian Aviation Act, which empowers airlines to fix ticket prices.

The petition seeks a reduction in airfares and the establishment of a cap on these fares, asserting that the existing Rule-135 of the Indian Aviation Act, grants airlines unchecked authority to determine ticket prices. This action has been taken in response to what the KPA perceives as unjust exploitation of Indian travelers through exorbitant fare hikes by airlines, creating a violation of the citizen’s right to travel.

Every air transport undertaking is expected to operate in accordance with sub-rules (1) and (2) of rule 134, which establish the tariff by considering all factors including the cost of operation and the characteristics of the service.

But a lack of clear guidelines or transparency in the tariff fixation process has allowed airlines to raise fares without restraint and unfair exploitation of the vulnerable diaspora. Consequently, both international and domestic fares have surged, with international fares increasing by 40% and domestic fares by 20%. The Gulf region witnesses the highest fare hikes during holiday seasons, between June to September, with airlines citing escalating fuel prices as the rationale.

Price hikes in popular sectors like Dubai – Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram, reached exorbitant levels, leaving passengers with limited options. The airlines’ exorbitant rates touched Rs 1,04,738 for flights to Kochi and up to Rs 2,45,829 for flights to Thiruvananthapuram. This rate is expected to continue till the end of September.

The Kerala Pravasi Association says that the government has failed to take necessary actions to curb the anti-consumer practices of airline companies, leaving expatriates with no choice but to pay Rs 40,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh for tickets that were previously available for Rs 7,000.

The petition also references the government’s previous intervention in setting fare caps for domestic flights based on flight duration. Currently, the rule states that flights of less than 40 minutes’ duration cannot be charged above Rs 2,900 (excluding GST) and above Rs 8,800 (excluding GST) per passenger.

The petition highlights the need for a similar regulatory approach for international fares. Kerala Pravasi Associatio is advocating for necessary amendments to the aircraft rules, to establish minimum and maximum fare limits for airlines, providing much-needed relief to travelers.

The Kerala Pravasi Association had also filed a petition in the Delhi High Court and have reached out to Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and the Director General of Civil Aviation, expressing their concerns about uncontrollable fare increases following a directive from the Delhi High Court. This demonstrates their determination to seek a resolution to the ongoing issue.

The petition was filed on behalf of the association by Chairman Rajendran Vellapalath and President, Aswani Nambarambath.

In a world where giant corporate enterprises dominate the markets, the promotion and support of startups and smaller entrepreneurs are imperative to the growth of any economy.

Today, India has firmly established itself as one of the largest global hubs for innovation and entrepreneurship. This can be attributed to several factors, including a more tech-savvy youth population, and a growing middle-class demographic that is increasingly supportive of startup ventures. As a result, startups mushrooming from the country have transitioned from being primarily service-oriented to product and tech innovation across various sectors.

Today, India creates over 10 million jobs annually and these numbers are driven largely by these startups. Globally, there are 150 million startups, with an astonishing 50 million new startups launching each year, averaging around 137,000 new businesses daily.

Thanks to this growth, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is also projected to experience a surge of 5-10% by 2030, according to the 2023 edition of Inc42’s “The Ecosystem” report. At a GDP growth rate of 6%, India’s economy will soon outpace the growth of the United States (4%) and the European Union (1%), trailing only behind China (9%) in the next decade.

The inception of the “Start-up India” campaign on August 15, 2015, marked a pivotal moment in India’s entrepreneurial journey.

A 2015 NASSCOM report revealed that India ranks fourth in the world, trailing only behind the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel, with approximately 3,100 startups per year. The trajectory is promising, as Indian tech startups are projected to generate around 250,000 jobs over the next five years. More recently, between 2014 and June 2023, India saw the launch of over 68,000 startups, cementing their position on the Global Start-up Map, as a hotbed of innovation and entrepreneurship.

If growth continues at the same pace, Indian tech startups are expected to create around 2.5 lakh jobs in the next five years. India is expected to have 112 million workers aged 20-24 by 2020, compared to China’s 94 million workers. The role played by start-ups is essential in giving a new dimension to entrepreneurship in the country.

But like any sector, the challenges faced by startups are not small.

Challenges like a shortage of skilled labor, insufficient funding, and fierce competition from corporate giants loom large. Inadequate infrastructure and the complexity of scaling operations pose formidable hurdles. Regulatory complexities and bureaucratic obstacles, too, have impacted many startups in some sectors.

Yet, in the face of adversity, India’s startup ecosystem continues to grow in numbers. This resilience is a testament to the belief that governments alone cannot drive economic progress.

By providing a more streamlined process and a startup-friendly regulatory environment that will sustain the startup-boom momentum, startups can also help tackle societal issues, propel growth, satisfy consumer demands, and fortify the economy.  Startup enterprises must continually invest, innovate, and refine existing innovations to lay the groundwork for advancing the nation’s economy. To cultivate and sustain the entrepreneurial ecosystem, India must confront the challenges that startups face.

Addressing these will significantly bolster economic growth, foster job creation, and spur innovation. By creating an environment conducive to startup success, India has the potential to ascend as a global nucleus for innovation and entrepreneurship.

പരമ്പരാഗത രാഷ്ട്രീയ ശൈലികളിൽ നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തമായി സ്വയം പര്യാപ്ത കേരളം എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തിനായി പ്രവാസികളുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ് കെപിഎ രൂപീകൃതമായത്. കെപിഎയ്ക്ക് കേന്ദ്ര തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് കമ്മിഷന്റെ അംഗീകാരം ലഭിച്ച് ഒരു വർഷം തികയുകയാണ്. കേരളത്തിലെ മാറുന്ന രാഷ്ട്രീയ മുന്നണി സമവാക്യങ്ങളിൽ പ്രവാസികളുടെ നിർണ്ണായക ഇടപെടൽ കൂടിയാണ് ഈ രാഷ്ട്രീയ പാർട്ടിയിലൂടെ KPA ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നത്.

സമസ്ത മേഖലകളിലും സമഗ്രമായ മാറ്റമാണ് ലക്ഷ്യം. നയരൂപീകരണങ്ങളുടെ ഭാഗമായി പ്രതിനിധി സമ്മേളനങ്ങൾ ജില്ലാതലത്തിൽ മൂന്നു മാസങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളിൽ പൂർത്തിയാവും. 2024 ആഗസ്റ്റിൽ സംസ്ഥാന സമ്മേളനത്തിന് കോഴിക്കോട് വേദിയാവും. ജനങ്ങളുടെ ദൈനംദിന ജീവിതവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട 36 മേഖലകളിൽ പഠനം നടത്തി വികസന മാതൃകകൾ രൂപീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് മാറ്റങ്ങളിൽ ശ്രദ്ധയൂന്നി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന പാർട്ടിയിൽ 18 വയസ്സ് തികഞ്ഞ ഇന്ത്യൻ പൗരത്വമുള്ള ഏത് ഒരു വ്യക്തിക്കും അംഗമാകാം.

വാർഡ് തലങ്ങളിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന നിസ്വാർത്ഥരായ പൊതുപ്രവർത്തകർക്ക് KPA യിൽ ചേർന്നു പ്രവർത്തിക്കാൻ അവസരം ഒരുക്കുന്നതിനോടൊപ്പം ജനാധിപത്യ പ്രക്രിയയിൽ അവസരങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

മറ്റുള്ള ജനാധിപത്യ രാജ്യങ്ങൾ അവരുടെ പൗരന്മാർക്ക് വോട്ടവകാശം രേഖപ്പെടുത്താൻ സൗകര്യം ഒരുക്കുന്നത് പോലെ 18 ദശലക്ഷം വരുന്ന പ്രവാസികൾക്ക് അവർ നിൽക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് നിന്നുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകളിൽ വോട്ടുകൾ രേഖപ്പെടുത്താനുള്ള അവകാശം നേടിയെടുക്കാൻ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പരമോന്നത നീതിപീഠത്തിന് മുന്നിൽ റിട്ട് ഫയൽ ചെയ്തു കൊണ്ടാണ് കെപിഎയുടെ രംഗപ്രവേശം. പ്രവാസി വോട്ടവകാശം ഇന്നേവരെ മറ്റൊരു മുഖ്യധാരാ രാഷ്ട്രീയ പ്രസ്ഥാനവും ആവശ്യപ്പെടാതിരുന്ന സാഹചര്യത്തിലാണ് കെപിഎ ഈ ആവശ്യവുമായി മുന്നോട്ടുവന്നത് എന്ന കാര്യം ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്.

കെപിഎ ട്രസ്റ്റ്‌ന് രൂപം നൽകി ജനങ്ങളുടെ അടിസ്ഥാന ആവശ്യങ്ങൾ നിറവേറ്റുന്നതിന് ഭാഗമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച പദ്ധതികളിൽ ആദ്യ പരിഗണന നൽകിക്കൊണ്ട് 1000 ഭവന പദ്ധതിയുമായി മുൻപോട്ടു പോകുന്ന അവസരത്തിൽ 3 വീടുകൾ കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയിൽ പൂർത്തീകരിച്ചു. കഴിഞ്ഞ ഡിസംബറിൽ താക്കോൽ ദാനം നടത്തിയെന്നത് എടുത്തു പറയേണ്ട കാര്യമാണ്.

തൊഴിലില്ലായ്മ പരിഹരിക്കുന്നതിനും വളർന്നുവരുന്ന യുവതലമുറക്ക് അടക്കം പുതിയ തൊഴിലവസരങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നതിന്റെയും ഭാഗമായി, പ്രവാസി ജോബ്സ്ന് രൂപം നൽകുകയും പദ്ധതി രൂപീകരണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ അവസാന ഘട്ടത്തിൽ എത്തിനിൽക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് വരുന്ന അഭ്യസ്തവിദ്യരായ തൊഴിലില്ലാത്ത യുവതലമുറയ്ക്ക് പ്രതീക്ഷകൾ നൽകുന്ന പദ്ധതിയാണിത്.

പുതിയ ഭാരവാഹികളെ യോഗത്തിൽ വെച്ച് തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. ശ്രീ അമൽജിത് ജില്ലാ പ്രസിഡന്റായും, ശ്രീ മൻസൂർ മണ്ണിൽ ജില്ലാ സിക്രട്ടറിയായും, ശ്രീ വേണു വെട്ടുമ്മൽ ട്രഷറാറായുമുള്ള ഇരുപതിനാലംഗ കമ്മറ്റിയെ യോഗത്തിൽ വച്ച് തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു.

കേരളാ പ്രവാസി അസോസിയേഷന്റെ സംസ്ഥാന സമ്മേളനങ്ങൾക്ക് മുന്നോടിയായുള്ള ജില്ലാ സമ്മേളനങ്ങൾക്ക് കണ്ണൂരിൽ തുടക്കം: കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ ജനങ്ങളെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ കൊലപാതകികൾ എന്നു മുദ്രകുത്തി ഒറ്റപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന രീതിയിൽ കടുത്ത അമർഷം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിക്കൊണ്ടുള്ള പ്രമേയമുൾപ്പെടെ, ജില്ലയുടെ വികസനവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട നിരവധി പ്രമേയങ്ങൾ അവതരിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

കണ്ണൂർ: (30-4-2023) സ്വതന്ത്ര രാഷ്ട്രീയ പാർട്ടിയായ കെപിഎയുടെ കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലാ സമ്മേളനം കണ്ണൂർ പയ്യാമ്പലം കൃഷ്ണ ബീച്ച് റിസോർട്ടിൽ കെപിഎ ദേശീയ ചെയർമാൻ ശ്രീ. രാജേന്ദ്രൻ വെള്ളപാലത്ത് ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തു. ദേശീയ പ്രസിഡണ്ട് ശ്രീമതി. അശ്വനി നമ്പാറമ്പത്ത്, ദേശീയ ജനറൽ സെക്രട്ടറി ശ്രീ. ജെറി രാജു മറ്റു ദേശീയ കൗൺസിൽ നേതാക്കളും കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ വിവിധ കമ്മിറ്റകളിൽ നിന്നെത്തിയ 470 ഓളം പ്രതിനിധികളെ അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്ത് സംസാരിച്ചു. ജനങ്ങളുടെ ദൈനദിന ജീവിതവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട മുപ്പത്തിയാറു മേഖലകളിൽ പ്രവാസികൾക്കുള്ള കാഴ്ചപ്പാടുകൾ നടപ്പിൽ വരുത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് സ്വയം പര്യാപ്തമായ ഒരു കേരളം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുക എന്നുള്ളതാണ് KPA മുന്നോട്ടു വെയ്ക്കുന്നത്. രാഷ്ട്രീയ കൊലപാതകങ്ങൾ അവസാനിച്ചിട്ടും കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ല കൊലപാതകികളുടെ നാടാണെന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഗൂഢശ്രമം നടക്കുന്നതായി കെപിഎ (കേരള പ്രവാസി അസോസിയേഷൻ) ആരോപിച്ചു. ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട അക്രമങ്ങൾ പെരുപ്പിച്ച് കാണിച്ച് കണ്ണൂരിനെ നശീകരണത്തിന്റെ നാടായി ചിത്രീകരിക്കാൻ ബോധപൂർവ്വം ശ്രമം നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കണ്ണൂരിന്റെ വികസനത്തിന് വെല്ലുവിളിയായി മാറുന്ന ഈ ദുഷ്പ്പേര് തിരുത്താൻ മുഖ്യധാര രാഷ്ട്രീയ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ ശ്രമിക്കാത്തതിൽ കെപിഎ കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലാ സമ്മേളനം പ്രതിഷേധിച്ചു. കണ്ണൂരിൽ നിന്നും കൂടുതൽ വിമാനങ്ങൾക്ക് സർവീസ് നടത്താൻ കേന്ദ്ര വ്യോമയാന മന്ത്രാലയം അനുമതി നൽകണമെന്നും ജില്ലാ സമ്മേളനം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. രാജ്യത്തെ വിമാന കമ്പനികൾ വിദേശത്തേക്ക് കണ്ണൂരിൽ നിന്നും 68 സർവീസുകൾ നടത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. പക്ഷേ വിദേശ വിമാന കമ്പനികൾക്ക് സർവീസ് നടത്താനുള്ള അനുമതി കേന്ദ്രം നൽകുന്നില്ല. കേന്ദ്ര വ്യോമയാന മന്ത്രാലയം നിഷേധാത്മക നിലപാട് തിരുത്തി വിദേശ വിമാന കമ്പനികൾക്ക് കണ്ണൂരിൽ നിന്നും സർവീസ് നടത്താൻ അനുമതി നൽകണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് കെപിഎ പ്രമേയം പാസാക്കി.

പ്രഥമ ജില്ലാ പ്രതിനിധി സമ്മേളനം ദേശീയ ചെയർമാൻ രാജേന്ദ്രൻ വെള്ളപ്പാലത്ത് ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തു. മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ഉൾപ്പെടെ ഉന്നതരായ രാഷ്ട്രീയ നേതാക്കളുടെ നാടായിട്ടുപോലും കണ്ണൂരിന്റെ ആവശ്യങ്ങൾ ഇതുവരെ ഇവർ ആരും പരിഗണിച്ചിട്ടില്ലെന്ന് രാജേന്ദ്രൻ വെള്ളപ്പാലത്ത് ആരോപിച്ചു. കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ടൂറിസം സാധ്യതയുള്ള ജില്ല കൂടിയാണ് കണ്ണൂർ. നാല് കിലോമീറ്റർ മണലിൽ പരന്നുകിടക്കുന്ന കേരളത്തിലെ ഏക ഡ്രൈവ്-ഇൻ ബീച്ചായ കണ്ണൂരിലെ മുഴപ്പിലങ്ങാട് ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ആറ് ഡ്രൈവ്-ഇൻ ബീച്ചുകളിൽ ഒന്നായി ബിബിസി 2016 ഇൽ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തിരുന്നു. മുഴുപ്പിലങ്ങാട് ഉൾപ്പെടെ ജനപ്രിയ ടൂറിസം കേന്ദ്രങ്ങൾ പൂർണ്ണമായും അവഗണിക്കപ്പെടുകയാണ്. കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയോടുള്ള കേന്ദ്ര സംസ്ഥാന സർക്കാരുകളുടെ അവഗണന അവസാനിപ്പിക്കണമെന്നും രാജേന്ദ്രൻ വെള്ളപ്പാലത്ത് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.

സമസ്ത മേഖലകളിലും സമഗ്രമായ മാറ്റമാണ് ലക്ഷ്യം. നയരൂപീകരണങ്ങളുടെ ഭാഗമായി പ്രതിനിധി സമ്മേളനങ്ങൾ ജില്ലാതലത്തിൽ മൂന്നു മാസങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളിൽ പൂർത്തിയാവും. 2023 ആഗസ്റ്റിൽ സംസ്ഥാന സമ്മേളനത്തിന് കോഴിക്കോട് വേദിയാവും. ജനങ്ങളുടെ ദൈനംദിന ജീവിതവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട 36 മേഖലകളിൽ പഠനം നടത്തി വികസന മാതൃകകൾ രൂപീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് മാറ്റങ്ങളിൽ ശ്രദ്ധയൂന്നി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന പാർട്ടിയിൽ 18 വയസ്സ് തികഞ്ഞ ഇന്ത്യൻ പൗരത്വമുള്ള ഏത് ഒരു വ്യക്തിക്കും അംഗമാകാം.

കെപിഎ ട്രസ്റ്റ്‌ന് രൂപം നൽകി ജനങ്ങളുടെ അടിസ്ഥാന ആവശ്യങ്ങൾ നിറവേറ്റുന്നതിന് ഭാഗമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച പദ്ധതികളിൽ ആദ്യ പരിഗണന നൽകിക്കൊണ്ട് 1000 ഭവന പദ്ധതിയുമായി മുൻപോട്ടു പോകുന്ന അവസരത്തിൽ 3 വീടുകൾ കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയിൽ പൂർത്തീകരിച്ചു. കഴിഞ്ഞ ഡിസംബറിൽ താക്കോൽ ദാനം നടത്തിയെന്നത് എടുത്തു പറയേണ്ട കാര്യമാണ്. KPA ട്രസ്റ്റിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ച് KPA ദേശീയ പ്രസിഡണ്ട് ശ്രീമതി അശ്വനി നമ്പാറമ്പത് പ്രധിനിധി സമ്മേളനത്തിൽ വിശദീകരിച്ചു.

തൊഴിലില്ലായ്മ പരിഹരിക്കുന്നതിനും വളർന്നുവരുന്ന യുവതലമുറക്ക് അടക്കം പുതിയ തൊഴിലവസരങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നതിന്റെയും ഭാഗമായി, പ്രവാസി ജോബ്സ്ന് രൂപം നൽകുകയും പദ്ധതി രൂപീകരണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ അവസാന ഘട്ടത്തിൽ എത്തിനിൽക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് വരുന്ന അഭ്യസ്തവിദ്യരായ തൊഴിലില്ലാത്ത യുവതലമുറയ്ക്ക് പ്രതീക്ഷകൾ നൽകുന്ന പദ്ധതിയാണിത്.

ജില്ലാ പ്രസിഡന്റ് മുഹമ്മദ് ഇഖ്ബാൽ അധ്യക്ഷത വഹിച്ചു. ദേശീയ ജനറൽ സെക്രട്ടറി ജെറി രാജു സംഘടന റിപ്പോർട്ടും ദേശീയ പ്രസിഡന്റ് അശ്വനി നമ്പാറമ്പത്ത് അനുബന്ധ പ്രവർത്തന റിപ്പോർട്ടും അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. ബീന സുനിൽ, രൂപേഷ് പുല്ലാഞ്ഞിയോടൻ, മനോജ് മാത്യു എന്നിവർ പ്രസംഗിച്ചു. മുഹമ്മദ് ഇക്ബാൽ (പ്രസിഡണ്ട്‌), അശോക് കുമാർ (വൈ.പ്രസിഡണ്ട്), രൂപേഷ് പുല്ലഞ്ഞിയോടൻ (സെക്രട്ടറി), മുഹമ്മദ് ആഷിഖ് (ജോ. സിക്രട്ടറി), മനോജ് കുമാർ (ട്രഷറർ), ആബിദ ഫക്രുദീൻ (ജോ. ട്രഷറർ) എന്നിങ്ങനെ 19 അംഗ കമ്മറ്റിയാണ് തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടത്.

ശരിക്കും അർഹത 50% നാണ്. പക്ഷേ 33% എങ്കിലും? പുരുഷാധിപത്യ സമൂഹത്തിനോടാണ് ഇനിയും ഫ്രീസറിൽ കിടക്കുന്ന ഒരു ബില്ലിനെക്കുറിച്ച് KPA ചോദിക്കുന്നത്. കേട്ടും പറഞ്ഞും നിരന്തരം ചർച്ച ചെയ്ത വിഷയം തന്നെ! അതെ ! നിയമനിർമ്മാണ സഭകളിലേക്ക് ( പാർലമെൻറിലേക്കും സംസ്ഥാന നിയമസഭകളിലേക്കും) വനിതാ പ്രാതിനിധ്യത്തെപ്പറ്റിയാണ് പറഞ്ഞു വരുന്നത്.

27 വർഷത്തോളമായി ഈ വിഷയം ചർച്ച ചെയ്യാൻ തുടങ്ങിയിട്ട്. സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിന്റെ അമൃതവർഷാഘോഷത്തിൽ ഇനിയും ഉത്തരം കിട്ടാത്ത ചോദ്യമായി ഈ പ്രധാന വിഷയം അവശേഷിക്കുന്നു. ഉത്തരം പറയാൻ പ്രമുഖ രാഷ്ട്രീയ കക്ഷികൾക്ക് ബാധ്യതയില്ലെ?
ഒന്നാം UPA സർക്കാരിന്റെ കാലത്ത് രാജ്യസഭയിൽ 156 നെതിരെ ഒരു വോട്ടേ എതിരായി വീണുള്ളു. ലോകസഭ പാസ്സാക്കാതിനാൽ ഈ ബിൽ അസാധുവായി എന്ന് നോന്നുന്നു! ഞങ്ങൾ സംശയിക്കുന്നു, മുഖ്യധാരാ രാഷ്ട്രീയ പാർട്ടികളെ..

ദേവഗൗഡ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി പദത്തിലിരുന്നപ്പോൾ 1996 സപ്തംബർ 12 നാണ് ലോകസഭയിൽ ഈ ബിൽ അവതരിച്ചത്. 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002…. എത്ര വട്ടം ചർച്ച നീണ്ടു?

ഇന്നത്തെ കേന്ദ്ര ഭരണകക്ഷികൾ രണ്ടു തവണയും പ്രകടന പത്രികയിൽ ഈ വിഷയം ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി ജനസംഖ്യയിൽ പാതി വരുന്ന സ്ത്രീ ജനങ്ങളെ വഞ്ചിച്ചു. അധികാരത്തിലെത്തിയാൽ നൂറു ദിവസം തികയും മുമ്പ് ഇത് നിയമമാക്കുമെന്ന് പ്രകടനപത്രികയിൽ പറഞ്ഞത് മറന്നതെന്ത്? ” രാഷ്ട്രീയ പാർട്ടികളുടെ സമവായത്തോടെ പരിഗണിക്കേണ്ട വിഷയമാണെന്ന ” തൊടുന്യായവുമായി കൈ കഴുകി മാറി നിൽക്കുന്നു അവർ ! കാർഷിക ബില്ലും പൗരത്വ ഭേദഗതി ബില്ലും വന്നപ്പോൾ ഈ ന്യായം മറന്നു പോയോ?

അർദ്ധരാത്രി പാർലമെന്റിന്റെ സംയുക്ത സമ്മേളനം വിളിച്ചു കൂട്ടി GST ബിൽ പാസ്സാക്കാൻ ഒരു പ്രയാസവുമുണ്ടായില്ലല്ലൊ. നിയമനിർമ്മാണ സഭകളിലേക്ക് സ്ത്രീ പ്രാതിനിധ്യം അവർ അർഹിക്കുന്ന അളവിൽ കിട്ടിയേ തീരൂ. ഇത് ഒരു ഔദാര്യമല്ല, അവകാശമാണ്. പ്രതിപക്ഷ പാർട്ടികളിൽ ഭൂരിപക്ഷവും ഇക്കാര്യത്തിൽ കേന്ദ്ര ഭരണകക്ഷികളുടെ കൂടെ നിൽക്കില്ലെ? ഭരണഘടനാ ഭേദഗതിക്ക് മൂന്നിൽ രണ്ട് ഭൂരിപക്ഷം നിഷ്പ്രയാസമല്ലെ ?

ഭരണനിർവ്വഹണം പരിചയത്തിലൂടെ ആർജ്ജിച്ചെടുക്കാമെന്നിരിക്കെ, സ്ത്രീകളെ രണ്ടാം തരം പൗരന്മാരായി കാണേണ്ടതുണ്ടോ? ആരും ഭരണാധികാരികളായി ജനിക്കുന്നില്ല.. സ്ത്രീകൾക്കും അവർ അർഹിക്കുന്ന അധികാരം കൈമാറൂ….

വനിതകൾക്ക് നിയമനിർമ്മാണ സഭകളിലേക്ക് 33% സംവരണം ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തുന്ന നിയമം ഒരു തുടക്കം മാത്രമാവണം. ലക്ഷ്യം 50 % തന്നെ. ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ജനാധിപത്യ വ്യവസ്ഥ നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന ഇന്ത്യ ലോകത്തിന് മാതൃകയാവട്ടെ.

The Women’s Reservation Bill, introduced in 1996, continues to remain pending in the Parliament of India. The proposal to amend the Constitution of India to reserve 33 per cent seats in the lower house of the parliament, Lok Sabha, and in all state legislative assemblies for women, remain forgotten.

The Kerala Pravasi Association has questioned the ignorance behind leaving such a crucial bill untouched. The Women’s Reservation Bill was initially introduced in the parliament on September 12, 1996. The bill was introduced in Lok Sabha by the United Front government of HD Deve Gowda. 

The Vajpayee government pushed for the bill in Lok Sabha but it still wasn’t passed. Later, the UPA-I government, led by Congress, again introduced the bill to reserve seats for women in Lok Sabha and legislative assemblies in May 2008. After its reintroduction, the bill was passed by Rajya Sabha on March 9, 2010, but was still left pending in Lok Sabha. Currently, the bill remains pending in the Lok Sabha. Since then, the passing of the bill has been a subject of many discussions and yet has not seen the light of day. A matter that has been under discussions for the last 27 years.

The bill will only be passed if the ruling government supports the bill with full force, as they have the majority in Lok Sabha.

The current central ruling parties have misled the women in our country, who constitute half of the population, by including this matter in the manifesto twice and promising action within 100 days of coming into power. These promises were broken under the disguise of “being a matter to be considered with the consensus of political parties”!

Sadly this remains the fate of only the Women’s Reservation Bill. When the Agriculture Bill and the Citizenship Amendment Bill was brought to light, joint session of Parliament was called at midnight to ensure the bill was prioritized and passed on time.

Women deserve better representation in the legislatures. It is not a bounty, but a right. Why are women in our country constantly being treated as second-class citizens when governance can be acquired through their experience?

A law ensuring 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures should be just the beginning of a long journey towards reaching a target is 50 per cent.

It is time for India, the largest democratic system in the world, to set itself an example to the rest of the world, said KPA.

വിദേശ സർവകലാശാലകളെ ഇരുകൈയും നീട്ടി സ്വീകരിക്കാൻ രാജ്യം തയ്യാറാകണം. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ രംഗത്ത് സമൂലമായ മാറ്റം അനിവാര്യമാണ്. അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര നിലവാരത്തിലുള്ള വിദ്യാഭ്യാസമാണ് ലഭ്യമാക്കേണ്ടത്. ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ നമ്മുടെ രാജ്യത്ത് വിദേശ സർവകലാശാലകൾക്ക് അവരുടെ ക്യാമ്പസ് പ്രവർത്തിക്കാൻ അവസരം നൽകേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ലോകം മാറുമ്പോൾ അതിനൊപ്പം കുതിക്കാൻ പുതുതലമുറകൾക്ക് കഴിയണം. വിദേശ സർവകലാശാലകൾക്ക് അവരുടെ ക്യാമ്പസ് തുടങ്ങാനുള്ള ചട്ടങ്ങൾ യുജിസി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഒരു ആഗോള വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ കേന്ദ്രമായി ഇന്ത്യയെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം പ്രത്യക്ഷത്തിൽ വിദേശ വിനിമയ നഷ്ടം ലാഭിക്കുകയെന്നതാണ്. ചൈനീസ് വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ, യുഎസ്, യുകെ, ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയ തുടങ്ങിയ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ വിദേശ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ വിഭാഗം ഇന്ത്യക്കാരാണ്.

വിദേശകാര്യ മന്ത്രാലയത്തിന്റെ കണക്കുകൾ പ്രകാരം 2022ൽ ഏകദേശം 13 ലക്ഷം വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ വിദേശത്ത് പഠിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ RBI കണക്കുകൾ പ്രകാരം 2021-2022 സാമ്പത്തിക വർഷത്തിൽ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ വിദേശത്തേക്ക് പോയത് മൂലം 5 ബില്യൺ രൂപയുടെ വിദേശനാണ്യം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു എന്നാണ്. ഇതൊരു മികച്ച നീക്കമാണ്, കൂടാതെ ഇന്ത്യയെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിന്റെ ആഗോള ലക്ഷ്യസ്ഥാനമായി മാറുന്നതിന് വഴിയൊരുക്കും. വിദേശത്ത് പഠിക്കുന്ന ഇന്ത്യൻ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ മസ്തിഷ്ക ചോർച്ചയും സാമ്പത്തിക നഷ്ടവും തടയാൻ മാത്രമല്ല, വിദേശ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെ ഇന്ത്യയിലേക്ക് ആകർഷിക്കാനും ഇത് സഹായിക്കും. പക്ഷെ ഇതിനൊപ്പം രാജ്യത്ത് അടിസ്ഥാന സൗകര്യങ്ങൾ വികസിപ്പിക്കാനും സർക്കാർ തയ്യാറാകണം. മികച്ച തൊഴിലവസരങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെടണം. എങ്കിൽ മാത്രമെ വിദേശ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ ഉൾപ്പടെ ഇന്ത്യയിലേക്ക് എത്തുകയുള്ളു.

വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ രംഗത്ത് സമൂലമായ മാറ്റം അനിവാര്യമായ ഇക്കാലത്ത് ഇത്തരം നീക്കങ്ങളെ സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്യണം. എതിർപ്പുമായി വരാൻ തയ്യാറെടുക്കും മുമ്പ് ഇത് ഭാവി ഭാരതത്തിനും വരും തലമുറകൾക്കും പ്രയോജനകരമായി തീരുന്നതെങ്ങനെ എന്നു വിലയിരുത്താൻ തയ്യാറാവണം. എന്തിനെയും എതിർക്കാൻ ഒരുങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നവർ ഇതിനെയും നഖശിഖാന്തം വിമർശിച്ച് കാലതാമസം വരുത്തും.പക്ഷെ ലോകം മുന്നോട്ടു കുതിയ്ക്കുമ്പോൾ നാം പിന്നിലായിക്കൂടാ എന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവ് നഷ്ടപ്പെടരുത്.

A radical change is necessary in the higher education sector in India by welcoming International universities and institutions to the country. By giving foreign universities an opportunity to operate their campus in our country, the country can retain its foreign students, promote India as a global education hub as well as save foreign exchange losses.

In a first, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has unveiled a draft regulation facilitating foreign universities and institutions to set up campuses in India which will allow them the autonomy in determining fees, as well as a 90-day approval process.

After Chinese students, today Indians make up the largest number of foreign students in countries such as the US, UK and Australia.

By promoting India as a global education hub, the Ministry of External Affairs hopes to retain the estimated 1.3 lakh students (2022 figures) who are studying abroad. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) this accounts for foreign exchange of Rs 5 billion (FY 2021-2022), which was lost as students chose to pursue their education abroad.

Welcoming foreign universities will pave the way for India to become a global destination for education. This will not only prevent brain drain and financial loss of Indian students studying abroad but also attract foreign students to India. These institutions will also have the autonomy to decide its fee structure and will not face the limits imposed on Indian institutions, as long as they are ‘fair and transparent’. The universities must also ensure they do not offer ‘any such programs which may endanger the national interest of India or the standard of higher education in India.’

A legislative framework facilitating the entry will be put in place, and universities will be given special dispensation regarding regulatory, governance, and content norms on par with other autonomous institutions of India. The Foreign Exchange Management Act will be followed when it comes to situations involving money and funding.

But along with this, it is also time necessary for the government to develop better infrastructure, that will support international students, in the country. Better jobs and better safety must be prioritized. The long term impact on the existing Indian educational institutions may also prove to be beneficial. The current breed of outdated institutions in India will be subject to dose of competition, which will turn to be positive. It will encourage competition among various players in the country and allow faculty-to-faculty research collaboration among various universities.

Such moves should be welcomed at this time when a radical change in the field of education is necessary. Before voicing any opposition, we should be ready to assess how this move will benefit the future of education in India and our future generations. Now is not the time for cynicism and criticism.

KPA ട്രസ്റ്റ് “ആയിരം ഭവന പദ്ധതി” പ്രകാരം നിർമിച്ച ആദ്യ വീടുകളുടെയും, KPA ട്രസ്റ്റ് നൽകുന്ന സാമ്പത്തിക സഹായത്തോടെ നിർമ്മിച്ച മറ്റൊരു വീടിന്റെയും താക്കോൽ ദാനവും, കാലവർഷ കെടുതിയിൽ തകർന്നുപോയ ഒരു വീടിനുള്ള ധന സഹായവും നിർവഹിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ”ആയിരം ഭവന പദ്ധതിയ്ക്ക്’ ഒപ്പം മറ്റു ജീവകാരുണ്യ പ്രവർത്തികൾക്കും തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചു. വാക്കുകൾക്കതീതമായ സ്നേഹവും ആവേശവുമായി പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്കു ആവേശമായി കൂടെഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന എല്ലാവരോടും ഹൃദയപൂർവം നന്ദി പറയുന്നു. സഹജീവികളോടുള്ള കരുതലും സമൂഹത്തോടുള്ള പ്രതിബദ്ധതയും ചേർത്തു പിടിച്ചു മാറ്റത്തിന്റെ മാറ്റൊലിയായി മുന്പോട്ടുള്ള ജൈത്രയാത്രയിൽ കരുത്തു പകരുന്നത് ആത്മാർത്ഥയോടെ പിന്നിൽ ഉറച്ചു നിന്ന സഹപ്രവർത്തകരുടെ നേരും, ആവേശവും പ്രവർത്തന വീര്യവുമാണ്. ഇനിയും മുൻപോട്ടു തന്നെ.

We will enforce action in the featured nine areas through people’s participation via public funding via Crowd Funding, CSR Funds and Donations. Kerala Pravasi Association’s nine priorities include :

5. Geriatric care that supports helpless senior citizens by providing them with physical and emotional support that often comes with ageing.
6. Implement projects to supply portable water to areas facing shortage of fresh water
7. Accelerate activities to implement hygienic and safe waste management and sanitation.
8. Plan poverty alleviation projects by ensuring basic needs are met.
9. Accelerating efforts to make women empowerment a reality rather than a slogan.

The Kerala Pravasi Association Trust officially handed over the first two homes, constructed under their ‘Ayiram Bhawan’  housing project that provides housing for the economically poor in Kerala, to its righful owners.

The Key handover took place at the Rajiv Gandhi Convention Center in the Mavur Gram Panchayat and was graced by Hon. Goa Governor Adv. PS Sreedharan Pillai.

The Ayiram Bhawan Project is a key initiative led by the Kerala Pravasi Association Trust, launched to provide housing and thereby uplift the quality of life of people in Kerala. The event also saw the handover of a second house built under the financial assistance provided by the KPA Trust as well as financial assistance, announced to a house damaged during the monsoons.

Kerala Pravasi Association and Kerala Pravasi Association Trust was founded by Rajendran Vellapalath, and Aswani Nambarambath, with a vision to build a modern, strong and resilient Kerala, under the leadership and expertise of Pravasi Malayalis.

Vellapalath who is the Hon. Chairman of the KPA Trust said, “At Kerala Pravasi Association (KPA), we envision a Kerala free from poverty, by enabling Pravasi’s from across the world to give. The Ayiram Bhavan Project is KPA’s dream project that was established to rehabilitate and provide shelter to the landless and homeless people in Kerala. With today’s key handovers, we begin an ambitious journey towards changing the lives of over 3.4 million people in Kerala by 2030.

The Kerala Pravasi Association Trust relies on CSR funds, Crowd Funding where individual donations are key to raise funds for our various initiatives. We invite our Pravasi brothers and sisters and Corporate Companies and other people irrespective of their religion, caste etc to join us on this journey towards building a stronger, more resilient Kerala.” he added.

Mr. PS Sreedharan Pillai in his inaugural speech said, “The Kerala Pravasi Association Trust’s Ayiram Bhavanam Project has truly opened new opportunities for the economically poor in our state. With the help of Pravasi’s who have always played an important role towards the economical growth of our state, I applaud initiatives like the ‘Ayiram Bhavanam Project’ and take this opportunity to congratulate Kerala Pravasi Association and its founders Rajendran Vellapalath and Aswani Nambarambath for making this possible.”

Babu Nelluli, Block Panchayat President distributed the financial assistance for the construction of the next house, under the scheme.

Kerala Pravasi Association Trust also unveiled a new Health Insurance Scheme at the event. Providing access to quality health care and heath insurance is also a key area for the party.

MK Raghavan, Hon. MP, Kozhikode unveiled the scheme along with Rajendran Vellapalath and Aswani Nambarambath, Hon. Vice-Chairman, Kerala Pravasi Association Trust.

As part of their initiatives to provide support to the differently-abled, KPA Trust also handed over wheelchairs to those in need. The wheelchairs were handed over by Gram Panchayat President, T. Ranjith.

Shaheen Khan, National Council Member gave the welcome speech and the Vote of thanks was presented by Trustee Bina Sunil. Block Panchayat Member Maimuna Katukanchiri and former Block Panchayat President Vellapalath Balakrishnan Nair also addressed the audience. Other dignitaries in attendance were Muhammad Abdul Hakeem Azhari, Hon. Managing Director of Marcus Knowledge City, Syed Muhammad Koya Thangal Jamalullaili, Hon. Kozhikode Khasi.

The Kerala Pravasi Association Trust will focus on nine priorities, which cover 36 areas related to the daily life of the people, by enabling Pravasi’s across the world to give. The nine priorities include :

The trust aims to enforce action in these nine areas, with people’s participation through public funding via Crowd Funding, CSR Funds and Donations. KPA has obtained 12A, 80G, CSR and DARPAN approvals, required for such legal fundraising.

More information on how to apply for these projects will be made available in the next few days. KPA Trust is currently accepting applications from individual districts,  once approved by their respective ward committee. All selfless persons working in public sector in Ward / Panchayat / Municipal / Corporation Committees are invited to send their applications.

The first house built under the Kerala Pravasi Association Trust’s ‘Ayiram Bhawan Project’ will be handed over to its rightful owner on December 29.

The key distribution of the first house in the thousand housing project and another house built with the financial assistance provided by KPA Trust will be held on Thursday, December 29 at 5.30 pm at Mavur Panchayat Community Hall. The announcement was made by the KPA National Council at a press conference held at the Kozhikode Press Club.

Goa Governor Adv. PS Sreedharan Pillai will donate the keys to the new homeowners. 

As part of Kerala Pravasi Association’s other philanthropic schemes, Hon. MP M.K. Raghavan will announce the Family Health Insurance Scheme while P.T.A. Rahim (Hon. MLA) will officiate the Scheme Declaration of the Trust. Managing Director of Marcus Knowledge City Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hakeem Azhari will distribute the financial aid for the construction of other homes while Kozhikode Qazi Syed Muhammad Koya Thangal Jamalullaili will distribute wheelchairsto needy members of the society.

The handover of the first home built under Kerala Pravasi Association Trust’s “Ayiram Bhawan Project” will take place on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at 5.30 pm at the Mavur Panchayat Community Hall in Mavoor, Kozhikode.

The event will see the handover of the project’s first home as well as another house that was made possible with the financial aid under the KPA Trust.

“The Ayiram Bhawan Project was devised for the homeless who live the toughest lives in the society. This project is aimed to build and provide 1000 houses in the first phase. Our dream is a society without homelessness. The Kerala Pravasi Association aims to be a beacon of hope for the downtrodden citizens of our homeland,” said a KPA party spokesperson.  

“Along with the ‘Ayiram Bhawan Project’ we have several other philanthropic schemes in the pipeline. At the event, we will also gift 5 wheelchairs to individuals with disabilities allowing the a mobile life and greater independence.”

Aswani Nambarambath , who serves as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Dubai-based TPConnects Technologies, a new generation travel technology company, has recently been granted UAE’s prestigious 10-year Golden Visa, given to prominent global personalities.

Nambarambath, a tech-enthusiast, has been a driving force in creating new technology capabilities in the hospitality and aviation distribution. The Central Government has clarified in the Supreme Court that it will soon take steps to provide facilities for non-residents and migrant workers to vote in the elections.

Attorney General R Venkataramani added that the confidentiality of the election will be maintained.

A bench headed by Chief Justice UU Lalit disposed the petitions regarding non-resident voting rights on the government’s assurance. The court while highlighting the case, said that the government should take a decision and that the Supreme Court’s interference in the power of the Parliament is limited.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had sent notices to the Center and the Election Commission, asking them to share their responses on the PIL seeking voting rights for non-resident Indians (NRIs).

Although the amendment for voting rights was introduced and passed in the Lok Sabha, it has not been introduced in the Rajya Sabha. As a result, the Chief Justice expressed that the court is not in a position to introduce and pass the amendment in the Parliament. The court also highlighted that non-resident Indians cannot demand the arrangement to vote be made for soldiers.

In 2014, Dr Shamseer Vayalil, a UAE-based petitioner approached the Supreme Court with a petition demanding that the government provide an opportunity for Indians working abroad to vote during elections, from their respective countries.

Kerala Pravasi Association (KPA) Chairman Rajendran Vellapalath and President National Council Aswani Nambarambath too filed a writ petition seeking voting rights for non-resident Indians (NRIs) in polls earlier this year.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice said that these petitions have been key in bringing the matter to the attention of the government. Advocate Harris Biran appeared on behalf of Dr Shamseer Vayalil, and advocates Kuriakose Varghese and Shyam Mohan on behalf of the Kerala Expatriate Association appeared in the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court last week, issued notice to the Central Government in a plea seeking to constitute an independent expert committee to study the efficacy of the current rabies vaccines in India filed by Kerala Pravasi Association.

A Supreme Court bench of justices led by Ajay Rastogi and CT Ravikumar issued notice after hearing Advocate Kuriakose Varghese assisted by Advocate V Shyamohan, asking for a stringent committee study on the efficacy of the Intra Dermal Rabies Vaccines (IDRVs) currently being administered to humans, on account of the number of deaths that have occurred despite timely administration of the vaccines in the Country.

These deaths have posed several questions regarding the treatment protocol, and more importantly, the efficacy of the vaccines, the plea states.

The plea has been filed by Dr. Rajendran Vellapalath, Chairman of Kerala Pravasi Association and Ms. Aswani Nambarambath, President of the Party who are also leaders of the Association through Advocates Kuriakose Varghese and V. Shyamohan, KMNP Law.

The plea highlights that ‘as per the National Centre for Disease Control, manufacturing of Rabies vaccine for humans, being a complex process, needs a minimum of three to four months for manufacturing and testing. Shockingly, there have been instances where the vaccine has reached the State within 14 days of manufacture.’

‘Non-adherence to the requisite quality checks would be a direct violation of Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India, apart from violations of provisions under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Rules thereunder.’

The petition also seeks direction to call for the records pertaining to instances, if any, where vaccines were procured by the State Governments without statutory approvals by the Central Drugs Laboratory.

Along with this, the rise in the number of rabies infected dogs is also a matter of concern, the plea points out. This would warrant an enquiry into the quality of anti-rabies vaccines administered to dogs. It is the petitioner’s case that eliminating the risk of rabies at its source i.e., dogs, is the most effective measure to curtail the spread of rabies’

‘Further, there are studies which reveal that even a single dose of vaccine is effective in curbing rabies in dogs,’ the plea stated.

As per experts, human rabies is a 100 per cent vaccine preventable disease and the vaccines are considered to be ‘highly effective, safe and tolerated’. Perforce, without vaccination, rabies is a fatal disease, the plea adds.

‘While improper administration of IDRV is stated to be a possible reason for failure of the medicine in some cases, the recent deaths points towards the very efficacy of the vaccine.’

The petition also underscored the importance of training medical staff of how to properly deal with dog bites.

‘Moreover, it is necessary that the medical staff be trained adequately to ensure that the National Guidelines for Rabies Prophylaxis, 2019 (‘Guidelines’) can be adhered to with respect to treatment of dog bite cases. Furthermore, the Guidelines ought to be given wide publicity, especially those relating to wound management, vaccine schedule etc., to prevent high fatality,’ highlights the plea.

Apart from setting up an expert committee, the petitioners also pray for wide publicity and to ensure proper and uniform implementation of the National Guidelines for Rabies Prophylaxis, 2019, with appropriate revisions from time to time as per the latest developments endorsed by WHO.

Businessman, film producer and philanthropist, MM Ramachandran, popularly known as Atlas Ramachandran has died.

The Kerala Pravasi Association (KPA) sent out tributes to the expatriate businessman, who had an active presence in the well-being of Pravasi Keralities.

“A businessman who gave employment to many people. A philanthropist who always reached out to the helpless. Beyond being an expatriate entrepreneur, Atlas Ramachandran was also actively involved in social issues of fellow Keralites. A man who persevered in adversity, he was a role model for many. He valued his peers and maintained a wide network of friends across the Arab countries. With the demise of Atlas Ramachandran, the diaspora has lost an entrepreneur” said a statement released by KPA.

Atlas Jewelry Group, which was started nearly three decades ago, had outlets in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE and across Kerala. The Group had also ventured into the healthcare, real estate and film distribution sectors. Besides his business interests, he was also known as a film producer and actor. He was once ranked among the “100 most powerful Indians in the GCC”.

Kerala Pravasi Association (KPA) condole the death of  CPI-M leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who passed away at a Chennai hospital on October 1.

“Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s strength was excellent leadership,” said a statement released by KPA.

“A leader with extraordinary courage and the ability to overcome adversity, Kodiyeri had distinguished himself in Kerala politics by his intervention which is respected by his opponents. He was careful to maintain relationships despite differences of opinion. Kodiyeri was one of the finest home ministers, the state has seen. He initiated revolutionary changes in the Kerala Police thereby succeeding in popularizing the police, brining them closer to the people. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was an excellent administrator and a powerful political leader. His demise is an irreparable loss to Kerala.”

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has been a five-term MLA from Thalassery since 1982 and has been the state Home and Tourism Minister in the V.S. Achuthanandan Cabinet. At the time of his death, he was a Politburo member of CPI-M, which is the highest decision-making body in the party.

A committee of experts to study and report on the effectiveness of the current rabies vaccine is the need of the hour, as Kerala reels from its recent stray dog menace that have seen as many as 20 deaths, out of which 15 were not administered the anti-rabies vaccine while the remaining five died despite administering the vaccine.

The Kerala Pravasi Association (KPA) reached out to the Supreme Court seeking immediate intervention to ensure that the quality of anti-rabies vaccine that is administered is up-to-date. The petition was filed by KPA Chairman Dr Rajendran Vellapalath and President Aswani Nambarambath.

The petition highlights that in recent years many people, bitten by dogs have died of rabies, raising doubts about the treatment protocol and the effectiveness of these anti-rabies vaccines.

Besides proper quality check on the vaccines, the failure to purchase and distribute these vaccines or unapproved distribution – where vaccines were known to have been procured even before requisite approvals were obtained from the Central Drugs Laboratory as per the norms; lack of sterilization of stray dogs in the last two years or implementation of a proper animal birth control program have all been factors leading to the stray dog menace.

The rise in the number of rabies-infected dogs calls for a direct enquiry about the anti-rabies vaccines administered to dogs as well. The petition calls for an independent expert panel to be tasked with studying the effectiveness of intradermal rabies vaccines (IDRVs). KPA have also requested for more publicity and a widespread campaign to ensure that a proper and uniform implementation of the National Guidelines for Rabies Prophylaxis, 2019 is followed with appropriate revisions from time to time as per the WHO guidelines.

According to the guidance note issued by National Centre for Disease Control the manufacturing of Rabies vaccine for humans, being a complex process, needs a minimum of three to four months for manufacturing and testing. However, there have been instances where the vaccine have reached the State within 14 days of manufacture. This calls for non-adherence to the requisite C quality checks would be a direct violation of Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India, apart from violations of provisions under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Rules thereunder.

Kerala Pravasi Association (KPA) Chairman and President, Rajendran Vellapalath and Aswani Nambarambath called on Mr Ramdas Atewala, President of Republican Party of India and Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment at his residence in Delhi recently.

During the meeting they addressed number of key subjects with the vision to bring to life KPA’s central projects, guided by the expertise of governing bodies under the KPA trust.

Discussions were held to jointly conduct a study and work towards starting center for the empowerment of persons with disabilities including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and other disabilities in Kerala.

The new center aims to provide thousands of children the opportunity of early detection of disabilities, which is crucial to ensure early intervention and thereby ensure optimal development.

The new center, when realized, will be part of party’s goal in implementing the expertise of expatriates across 36 areas, including agriculture, environment protection, health and wellness, industrial development and manufacturing sectors, aimed to uplift and provide a sustainable livelihood to its beneficiaries.
